Plain-Language Draft
March 2026 · Version 0.1 (Pre-Launch)
Draft — Not Yet Final
This privacy policy is a pre-launch draft. It reflects our commitments and intentions as we build MILO, but it has not yet been reviewed by legal counsel. The final published version may include additional legal language and jurisdiction-specific details. The plain-English commitments below will remain.
The Short Version
What MILO will never do
Sell your data. Not to advertisers, not to publishers, not to anyone. Your reading habits are yours.
Boost results for money. If a manga appears first, it's because it genuinely matched your query. No publisher or platform can pay to rank higher. Ever.
Build a shadow profile. If you don't have an account, we don't track you across sessions. If you do, you can see everything we know.
Show you ads. MILO is not ad-supported. Your attention is not our product.
What MILO does with your data
We use your interactions — searches, library additions, ratings, reading progress — to make MILO better for you personally and better for everyone generally. But we draw a hard line between those two purposes:
What it includes: Your taste profile, library, ratings, reading progress, personalization preferences. The things that make MILO work for you specifically.
How long we keep it: As long as you have an account. Delete your account and it's gone. You can also see, edit, or delete any individual piece at any time via the 'What MILO Knows' page.
What it includes: Timestamped records of searches, clicks, page views, and session behavior. Used to train and improve our recommendation models.
How long we keep it: 90 days. After that, these logs are aggregated into your taste profile and the anonymous analytics. The raw logs are then deleted.
What it includes: Aggregated, de-identified data: search volume trends, feature usage, genre popularity, onboarding completion rates, performance metrics. Cannot be traced back to any individual.
How long we keep it: Indefinitely. This data is how MILO improves over time. Because it is fully anonymized and aggregated, it cannot identify you and is not subject to deletion requests.
You Choose How Much MILO Knows
Personalization makes MILO better, but it requires data. We don't think that choice should be binary. So we offer three tiers — you pick the one that feels right for you, and you can change your mind at any time.
None. Editorial recs only.
Nothing.
Maximum privacy. You just want to search.
On-device taste model. Nothing leaves your device.
On your device only.
Personalization without cloud dependency.
Full server-side pipeline. The best experience.
Encrypted on MILO's servers. You can see and delete it all.
Users who want MILO to learn and grow with them.
Switching tiers takes effect immediately. If you move from Cloud to Local, your server-side data is deleted within 24 hours. If you move from Cloud to Anonymous, everything is deleted — taste profile, library, interaction history. We confirm before we do it, but once it's done, it's done.
The ‘What MILO Knows’ Page
If you're on the Cloud tier, MILO builds a model of your taste over time. Most platforms treat this model as an internal black box. We show it to you.
The ‘What MILO Knows’ page in your settings shows:
- Your taste map: A visual representation of your genre and theme affinities — not raw numbers, but a readable map of what MILO thinks you enjoy and why.
- The titles that shaped it: The specific manga that most influenced your profile. You can see which completions, ratings, or re-reads had the biggest impact.
- Inferred preferences: Things MILO has concluded about you — like ‘prefers completed series’ or ‘reads mostly late at night.’ These are editable. If MILO got it wrong, correct it.
- Delete anything: Remove any inference, any title's influence, or your entire profile. Deletions trigger an immediate recomputation of your taste model.
This page exists because we believe that if a system is making choices on your behalf — recommending manga, sorting your library, shaping what you discover — you have the right to understand how it sees you, and to correct it when it's wrong.
Cookies and Tracking
MILO uses a minimal set of cookies required for the product to function:
- Session cookie: Keeps you logged in. Expires when you close your browser or after 30 days, whichever comes first.
- Preference cookie: Remembers your personalization tier choice and display settings (language, theme). No expiration while your account exists.
That's it. No third-party tracking cookies. No advertising pixels. No analytics scripts from Google, Facebook, or anyone else. Our anonymous analytics are collected server-side, not through browser tracking.
Third Parties
MILO does not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for their own purposes.
We use infrastructure providers to operate the service (hosting, email delivery, payment processing if applicable). These providers process data on our behalf and under our instructions. They do not have independent rights to your data.
Children
MILO is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we learn that we have, we will delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy in a way that affects your rights or how we handle your data, we'll notify you by email at least 30 days before the change takes effect. We won't bury changes in a version history and hope you don't notice.
